![I’m honoured to share [If I Knew Your Feet], as part of “All my tiny relations; Lichens and Moss” at the Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre, a beautiful exhibition bringing together the work of this summer’s Shakaat artists in residence. @kwanlindunculturalcentre
These pointy-toe moccasins honour my ancestors, who walked far and wide across the land. Their design grew from my archival research into this historical Dene footwear style, once widely worn across the Western Subarctic. As I stitched, I thought about the paths my ancestors travelled, the lives they carried, and the footsteps that continue to guide us.
Through Dene porcupine quillwork and small, caribou hair tufted details, I connect with our ways of making. I think of the hands that dressed their loved ones’ feet, offering warmth and protection while carrying beauty, identity, and belonging. Making these moccasins brought my hands closer to their stories.
I’m also thankful to have harvested the lichen featured in the show during our family hunting trip this autumn, high in the mountains near a place close to my heart. A little of that time on the land with my family is held here, too.
It’s deeply touching to see all the beautiful artwork in this exhibition and the ways each artist reflects on our relations. I’m grateful to share space with their stories and the care woven into their work.
If I Knew Your Feet is an invitation to imagine knowing my ancestors through their footsteps and to honour what they have left for us to carry forward.
